McAdam Park hosts Round Three Of The GMCC Club Championships
This Sunday, August 23, 2009 could be one of the last events - the third round of the Geelong Moto Cross Club Championships - at McAdam Park, Barrabool, if Geelong City Council does not approve $1.2m in funding over two years to save the club and the sport in the region next Tuesday night.
This family event kicks-off at 9.30am with some of the regions youngest riders on display from Colac, Sporting Motor Cycle and Geelong Moto Cross clubs.
Barwon Recreational Motorcycling Council Chairman, Peter Lindeman said this event is part of the campaign to save a family orientated sport - the same as football, soccer and netball - and to also save McAdam Park as the regions only legal off-road riding and education facility.
“We would encourage those who are interested in the sport and McAdam to come to the internationally recognised McAdam Park circuit on Haines Road, Barrabool this Sunday. We are expecting several hundred riders and their families and it will be a fantastic day to showcase what a true family and community sport we have in off-road riding.
“We have invited councillors from various municipalities to attend as many have never been to McAdam Park, and we believe this is vital for them to see the benefits of such a facility firsthand.
“This Sunday could essentially be one of the last events held at McAdam Park if we do not get City Of Greater Geelong funding support to ensure we can continue holding events here which pour more than $5m per year into the local economy
“We have had tremendous financial support from State Member for South Barwon Michael Crutchfield and the Brumby Government as well as the Surf Coast Shire.
“Hundreds of local businesses and residents have also dug deep and purchased tiles from the Sporting Motor Cycle Club’s Big Picture Wall, and we encourage more people to visit the web site www.bigpicturewall.com to see how they can help.
“Should McAdam Park be saved there will be a very strong emphasis on both road and off-road rider education and training particularly aimed at juniors and new riders, as this is essential for the sport and to also assist in curbing fatalities on and off-road and ensuring riders have a safe and controlled facility to use.
“Over the past several decades McAdam Park has hosted some of the greatest motorcycle riders in the sports history, and it is the current home track for Geelong-based multiple former Mr Motocross championship and sporting icon Craig Dack, whose CDR Rockstar Yamaha team claimed their second Australian Motocross Championship victory in a row recently with Jay Marmont and Cheyne Boyd.
“Mc Adam Park has hosted numerous national and international events over the decades which have poured millions of dollars into the Geelong and Surf Coast economies and we envisage that these vital economic events will continue,” Mr Lindeman said.
